Bangalore most corrupt in India
Article published in TOI today lists Bangalore on the Top when it comes to corruption. Another No.1 which this city shouldn't be proud of, and the amount of bribe payed was staggering Rs.16 crores compared to the second in the list which is Chennai with Rs.7.05 crores. Most of these bribes are related to getting land documents, electricity, water and sewerage connections, passport verification and admission to educational institutions.
There is such deep rooted bureaucracy in this country and how could Bangalore with its IT muscle escape. I recount multiple personal experiences in which I was left helpless in the recent past. As much as we detest paying bribes we sometimes are left with no options. I had to pay bribe to register my own wedding which as perfectly legal under any countries laws. And when I refused to heed to the officials demands he replied -this is how it works or forget your registration.
Last month we were experiencing water issues, we had a heavy mix of sewage water with drinking water and when we complained, the people in charge came and spoke like they were doing us all a mighty favour. In spite of this been their job he asked for a hefty bribe to fix it, we were so desperate to get the issues addressed we had to pay. And ironically the issue wasn't fixed thanks for a shabby job, and the same marathon was repeated.
Also note I am denying any existences of bureaucracy in private companies or institutions but the degrees are poles apart, the plague is in government sectors. These officials from any departments listed above ask for bribe so shamelessly because they know they will get it, as we are so disconnected with our rights and government regulations. Few suffer because there is no collective effort to change the system. And until we all do something about this we will be seeing more surveys with bigger numbers.
